Are you a physician, innovator, or entrepreneur with a commercial idea that might be a startup? Join us for this half-day event to discuss today’s unique challenges for life science, medical, and health entrepreneurs starting companies and raising capital. Learn from some of the leading life science entrepreneurs, investors, lawyers, and accountants in New England and network with other life science entrepreneurs.

Building on the success of The Capital Network’s annual Fast Track Boot Camp for Entrepreneurs, this Life Science Fast Track is an intensive, interactive half-day seminar designed to provide entrepreneurs and investors an in-depth understanding of what it takes to raise early stage capital for a life science startup.

8:30 -9:30 Unique challenges for life science entrepreneurs 

What steps can you take during the early stages of your business development to put your company in the best position to address with these challenges? How can you address and deal with these challenges? This panel discussion, featuring an entrepreneur, an investor, and a lawyer will give an overview of today’s challenges for life science entrepreneurs and set the stage for the day’s program.

9:30 – 10:30 Angels,VC or public funding – Can your company attract the capital? 

So you have a product, but how do you know if you should start a company? This panel will feature an entrepreneur, angel, and a VC and will explore the differences between the various fundraising sources. The panel will focus on determining the market for your product and which funding source is most appropriate to maximize the exit for your company.

10:45 – 11:45 Building the team

It is an oft repeated truism that angels and venture capital firms invest in teams more than they invest in ideas and technologies. Topics discussed will include:

  • What is a founder’s role on the management team?
  • Is the current team complete enough for the stage of the company?
  • Does the current team need someone to play an interim role to fill in a critical need?
  • At what stage of the company growth would it be appropriate to have a management reorg?

12:00 – 1:00 – Mentor:Mentee Lunch

The Mentor:Mentee lunch session is an opportunity for the Boot Camp entrepreneurs to ask questions and receive advice from experienced entrepreneurs, strategic professionals, or early stage investors and who are active supporters of New England’s entrepreneurial community.  The lunch will be structured for 3 entrepreneurs to be matched and eat lunch with 1 entrepreneurship expert.  In addition to the educational learning the Mentor:Mentee lunch will help foster community to provide networking and communication support, and to accelerate the success of New England’s innovation economy.

1:00 pm – 2:30 – Does Your Company Have the Big 3? – Intellectual Property, Regulatory, and Reimbursement

You may have developed breakthrough technology that is safe and effective, but it won’t generate the revenue you anticipate unless it can be properly protected, approved, and reimbursed.  This session will review the three keys to success: Intellectual Property Protection, Regulatory Strategy, and Reimbursement Approval.  Topics will include understanding patent strategy, impacts of design change, clinical trial costing and methodology, and business model integration that dovetails with payor priorities.

A panel of experts will also discuss reimbursing your employees and developing a strategy for building and managing industry partnerships.
